The woad plant drawn by Jacob Sturm in 1796, from a smart volume titled Deutschlands Flora in Abbildungen.

Number 28, The Woad. Number 28, the Woad.

Woad is one of several words in English that may be better left unspoken, for it sounds like "road" with a lisp.

Try the extract of its quill-shaped leaves next time you're out for a tattoo: the blue eventually wears off, but it often leaves horrific scars like real oldtime battle wounds that you can wear proudly almost anywhere in Anglo-America.
